Pirate Party Cakes -

treasure chest cake Treasure Chest Cake
Bake a standard sized loaf cake and let cool. Trim off the top third of the cake for the cover of the treasure chest. Frost both top and bottom pieces. Prop the top portion up on two pretzel sticks on the front of the cake, giving the effect of an open chest.

Cut strips of fruit roll-ups to make the straps on the chest. Add lots of pirate loot inside (you can even scoop some cake out of the bottom to make a bigger cavity). This will help hold up the cover also. Pirate plunder could consist of colorful nonpareils, gushers, multi-colored foil covered candies, candy necklaces etc. Browse the candy aisle and let your imagination run wild!

Little Pirate Cake Pan - makes a cute pirate cake and other characters too!

Pirate Ship Cake
Here's another easy yet impressive pirate party idea. Bake two cakes in different sizes of oval-shaped pans. Stack small cake on top of larger one and frost as desired. Chocolate frosting looks great.

Pipe on portholes and "railings" in a different color. Cut sails from colorful felt pieces and run a skewer through the middle of each. Three skewers with two sails each looks best. Insert into cake at different heights. Shredded blue crepe paper can be placed in "waves" on the platter around the cake. Add a couple of plastic toy pirates and a few pieces of candy cargo and you're ready to ply the high seas!

Here's another cool pirate party idea: Use the pirate figures from this Pirate Playset to decorate your pirate ship cake, then give the set to the party child as a keepsake gift...

Pirate Party Decorations -

Here's even more fun pirate party ideas to make your guests feel part of a real high seas adventure!

Fashion a Jolly Roger flag from an old sheet by drawing a skull and crossbones in black marker. Tie it to a stick and display by the front door.

Then cut a large treasure map out of parchment type paper, burn the edges and crumple it a bit to make it look old. Put a big red X on it for buried treasure. Hang it up in the party area. Another great pirate party idea for decorating is this cool, ready-made treasure map wall mural. To complete the look, use red, black and white balloons throughout.

Decorate the party table with burlap covered with rope netting or use hemp from the craft store to add an authentic nautical look. Scatter with seashells. Or, try this fishnet and tissue bubble fish set for a colorful table array or wall hanging.

A play parrot, plastic or stuffed is a nice addition, especially the type that mimic voices when they are spoken to.Scatter gold coins and colorful beaded necklaces throughout the party area. Use gold, red, or black utensils.

Check out these pirate-themed paper goods featuring a real scary pirate character!

Pirate Party Costumes -

Purchase inexpensive bandannas for each guest to wear. Cut lengths of red and white striped or gold fabric for pirate sashes.

This is a perfect facepainting opportunity as you add curly mustaches, stubbly beards and sideburns to each child. Temporary tattoos would look great too.

You might wish to supply hats and eyepatches for that final touch: Now your guests are all looking like proper pirates!

Pirate Party Crafts -

Decorate Spyglasses: Save your paper towel rolls and cover with construction paper. Fold a piece of clear wrap over both ends and secure with colorful tape. Have guests personalize them with their names and colorful beads and sequins. Here's a good spyglass sample to give you some ideas.

Decorate Treasure Boxes: Before the party, ask the local donut shop for some small donut hole boxes. Spray paint them brown and make some black marker lines to resemble wood. Write each child's name on the box in gold glitter paint and let them decorate as desired. All pirate loot acquired during the party can be stored in their treasure boxes until it's time to go home.

Or, make it easy on yourself and order this treasure chest craft kit.
